Advertisement for WPV Directors


Water Polo Victoria (WPV) seeks nominations from suitably qualified people to fill a number of Board positions. Currently there are two elected Board positions and one co-opted position vacant. All Board positions are readvertised annually, and elections are conducted during the Annual AGM in November.

WPV is the is the governing body for water polo in Victoria, with 22 affiliated clubs and approximately 1,400 members. It is affiliated with the national body, Water Polo Australia (WPA). WPV and its affiliated clubs offer competitions throughout the year, from under 12 years through to adults of all ages. In addition, WPV runs an athlete development program for talented and aspiring athletes.

The criteria for the Board positions are as follows:

  • A keen interest in developing and supporting Water Polo in Victoria

  • The ability to work cooperatively and as part of a team on a board

  • An understanding of good governance and especially

  • The leadership role of a Board and of its Directors

  • The necessary capacity to focus on strategic rather than operational issues, and the corresponding ability to distinguish between matters for the Board and matters for management

  • The requirements to meet the obligations of being a board member including preparations for meetings, contributions out of meeting time and the attendance at WPV events as relevant.

  • An understanding of the role community sport plays in Victoria

Favourable consideration will be given to candidates who fill some or all of the following criteria:

  • A proven background in one or more of the following areas:

  • Legal (qualification and experience in legal practice with emphasis on the sports industry and not-for-profit governance.);

  • Government Relations (experience in managing government relations and industry advocacy strategies);

  • Finance and accounting (qualifications and experience in accounting and/or finance and the ability to analyse key financial statements; critically assess financial viability and performance; contribute to strategic financial planning; oversee budgets and the efficient use of resources; and oversee funding arrangements and accountability).

  • Marketing background – in particular, marketing experience with sporting bodies/events

  • In setting the above criteria, the WPV Board, has considered:

  • WPV’s strategic plan

  • Good governance principles which include the need for a skills-based board.

  • The current make-up of the Board and the Board’s self-assessment of its skills and performance.

Additional information and instructions

  • The WPV Board comprises a maximum of nine (9) elected Directors and up to two (2) co-opted/appointed Directors as prescribed by the Constitution

  • WPV is committed to diversity and inclusion in all its business and activity areas.

  • There are eleven Board Meetings per year held monthly, at 6:30pm on the second Monday of the month at MSAC, Aughtie Drive, Albert Park.

Nominations for the above position close on 7 June 2019 at 5.30pm and should be submitted to the Company Secretary – Jo-Anne Dal Santo – via email to jo@nauticblue.com.au Nominations should include a CV not exceeding 3 pages, and a cover letter not exceeding 2 pages addressing the above criteria. Applications will be circulated to all WPV Board members. At its discretion, the WPV Board may conduct candidate interviews. Any interviews will take place in the week starting 10 June 2019
