WPVic Athlete Nominations to National Squads

WPVic would like to clarify for athletes the WPA Announcement of the National Age Group Squads last night.

I can confirm that Victorian athletes have not been left out of selections to the National Squads. It had been previously agreed with WPA for Victorian nominations to be provided at a later date on the basis that the originally scheduled dates for the National Camps in September/October holidays were to be postponed. This decision was to provide the best opportunity for athletes in Victoria to prepare for possible nominations due to the ongoing impact of COVID restrictions.

WPVic was not aware that this announcement was going to made at this time. As soon as we became aware of the news, WPVic has contact WPA to reinforce the agreed position in regard to Victorian nominations and express the community disappointment resulting from the announcement. WPA have acknowledged the feedback and assured us that it would be taken on board.

I would also like to inform you that WPA has been supportive of the ongoing predicament in Victoria with a number of initiatives currently being planned to assist WPVic members. In particular I want to thank Richard McInnes and Nicola Johnson (WPA Pathways Manager) for their understanding of the circumstances being faced by Victorian athletes and their consideration of measures to ensure that we are not disadvantaged.

Regrettably, the drafting of the announcement last night did not clearly highlight in the opening message that Victorian & Western Australian nominations would be provided at a later date. See below message that was at the bottom of the website announcement. I note that the social media posts have subsequently addressed this issue by including a comment at the top of the post.

“Current athletes selected preclude athletes from Victoria and Western Australia. Water Polo Victoria was unable to hold talent ID camps due to current COVID-19 restrictions. Water Polo Western Australia are yet to nominate players for this program. Both States will have the opportunity to nominate athletes at a later stage.”

To provide an outline of future processes and opportunities relating to the National Aged Group Program, a WPVic Information Session has been arranged for State TID athletes & parents, and anyone else who want to attend. This session with be held via Zoom Meeting tomorrow Friday 28th August at 6:00-6:30pm (see below login details). If anyone has any specific questions or queries, please forward to executiveofficer@vicwaterpolo.com.au prior to the meeting.

Please be assured that WPVic Board and management will continue to ensure that Victoria is not disadvantaged at a National level and provide the best possible development opportunities to athletes.

If anyone would like to discuss this matter in greater detail, please do not hesitate to make contact at executiveofficer@vicwaterpolo.com.au
