CEO Update: May 2025

Good morning all and welcome to the first update from Water Polo Victoria CEO, Regan Longfield. The CEO update will shine a spotlight on the month that was and showcase just some of the great programs, initiatives and news from across the Water Polo Victoria landscape.

Future monthly updates will aim to be 2-3mins long, and we hope they help to connect us all with all the great things that are happening throughout the Water Polo Victoria community!

May 2025 Wrap

State Squad Program makes a splash

The Water Polo Victoria state program kicked off with a jam-packed trial weekend in early May. We saw almost 200 kids take to the pool across our 13&U, 15&U and 17&U age groups, which was incredibly exciting to see such great numbers for this program. Congratulations to all those who were selected into our VIC squads, and thanks to all those coaches and selectors for their hard work here, as well as all the athletes and parents who came down to be a part of the program. I wanted to make special mention that athletes from nine of our clubs are represented in these squads, as well as multiple O&M Teams, which is just great to see!

Australian Country Championships

Victoria performed incredibly well on the Gold Coast earlier this month at the WPA Country Championships! After some excellent performances, both the Women's team, coached by Perri Randall and the Men's team, coached by Chloe Lim made into the bronze medal match for the tournament.

Ultimately both of our VIC teams fell agonizingly short of taking that medal, the Men in particular going down by just 1 goal! A shout out to VIC and Ballarat player, Julia Barton, for being named in the Tournament 7!

Term 2 Programs

Our Term 2 calendar has seen a break from WPV Autumn competition, instead opening the calendar up for some new and exciting initiatives across the community. There are many to mention but I wanted to highlight just a few.

  • The Invitational Friendly series has seen club members from NYP, DVE, Northcote, Monash, Essendon and Footscray come together to play Polo. Two rounds have already been held, with almost 200 kids involved! Congratulations to all involved in such a great initiative.

  • The Richmond cup continues to run and provide players, as well as referees, competitive matches to continue to develop their skills and play polo! Richmond also hosted Come & try events for juniors that saw dozens of kids attending.

  • Melbourne Surge have hosted a 4-week boot camp for existing players to develop their skills, whilst their very popular social competition has started again for new and returning players to enjoy!

  • Water Polo Vic have also hosted a Thursday night social program, open to new and existing adult players. It has been great to see so many new participants engage in our great sport!

  • I know of plenty of other great initiatives across the community, and want to thank everyone for all their hard work here.

High-Performance

Congratulations to MC and Victorian Phoenix players Daniel Magasanik and Nick Mordes in being named in the 20&U Men 2025 World Championship Squad. A great achievement for both players. Also, a congratulations to Rowie Webster on being named Head Coach to lead the Australian Women's team at the World Uni Games. This event will take place in Germany from mid-July.

We also welcomed the Singapore Men's National team to Melbourne in May, the Victorian Phoenix men playing some friendly matches against them over tw0-days.

A big month, and another big one coming up in June as we officially enter Melbourne Winter!

See you poolside!

Regan Longfield,

CEO Water Polo Victoria
